A thyssenkrupp Europe steel spokesman said in an email: "we are adjusting the production line due to the current economic impact of COVID 19.These include the operation of blast furnaces and steel processing." The company also said further production cuts were possible, but did not give an exact figure.The working hours of production and management personnel will be reduced and the process is expected to begin in mid-april and continue through early may.[TJC STEEL] Japan Railway Shut Down 8.1 Million Tons Of Capacity: Nippon steel said on Tuesday it would idle two blast furnaces in the eastern and western parts of Japan in response to a drop in demand for steel for cars and buildings during the coronavirus pandemic. The no. 1 blast furnace at the kajima plant in ibaraki prefecture will be shut down in mid-april, and the no. 1 blast furnace at the wakayama plant in wakayama prefecture will be shut down later that month, the company said.The combined capacity of the two furnaces is 15 per cent of the company's total capacity of 54m tonnes of crude steel, or 8.1m tonnes. The company also said that starting this month, its staff will work in locations such as its headquarters and domestic steel plants[TJC STEEL], totaling about 30,000 employees, and will take two more days off each month.
