Brazilian Steel Mills Are Shutting Down Their Blast Furnaces: On April 3rd Gerdau announced plans to cut production.It said it was closing a 1.5m tonne blast furnace and the remaining operating one could produce 3m tonnes a year.Geldau suspended operations at the Charqueadas furnace plant for 15 days. Usinas Siderurgicas DE Minas Gerais, a steelmaker, said it would close two more blast furnaces and keep only one open, bringing the total to four.Currently, Usiminas steel has an annual capacity of about 2.35 million tons.
